Nigerian Man Sentenced to Over 11 Years in Federal Prison for Conspiring to Launder Tens of Millions of Dollars from Online Scams

A Nigerian man who conspired to launder tens of millions of dollars through a series of online scams was sentenced today to 135 months in federal prison. Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, also known by his Instagram handle, “Ray Hushpuppi,” was sentenced by United States District Judge Otis D. Wright II, who also ordered Abbas to pay $1,732,841 in restitution to two fraud victims.

Grassley bill to fight computer crime passes

On Tuesday night, the Senate approved the National Computer Forensics Institute Reauthorization Act of 2022, co-sponsored by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Dianne Feinstein (D-California). The bill will reauthorize the National Computer Forensics Institute (NCFI) for five years and provide $10 million in funding for each fiscal year through 2026. The NCFI is a training facility for state and local law enforcement officers and prosecutors that opened in Hoover, Alabama in 2008. It is operated by the United States Secret Service in partnership with the Alabama Office of Prosecution Service. To date, over 4,000 law enforcement officers and prosecutors have been trained at the NCFI.
